Facemasks and other PPEs have been used in care homes for safety measures even before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the problems with with facemasks have become more noticeable and difficult to overlook. Some of the problems with conventional masks in the care home sectors are:
Due to the single-use nature of conventional mask which result in frequent disposal. Most of the mask waste (mostly non-degrable) ends up in incenerated in landfill, thereby polluting the ecosystem.
Most masks don’t fit the face well which allows for warm, moist breath to escape. That breath hits the glasses and creates instant fog.
A transparent face mask can support communication between those who have hearing difficulties or are deaf, patients/service users with cognitive problems such as dementia, and those with learning disabilities.
The discomfort caused by facemask is one major inhibition to mask-wearing. Painful sensation around the ears is a common problem with care workers. Heat produced due to limited airflow also caused great discomfort.
Many care worker have reported shortness of breath, especially during rigorous work.
